Payback is front and center in the new season of Showtime series The Chi.
The coming-of-age drama returns for a seventh season this summer, and the network recently dropped the official trailer.
The video opens with: “Women, this is our chance, it’s time to get to work,” as Alicia, played by Lynn Whitfield, leads the charge to protect Chicago’s South Side.
Season 7 picks up with Alicia taking control, setting the stage for a dramatic power struggle among the pivotal women of The Chi.
“Yet as loyalties are tested and new rivalries are stoked, it becomes clear that there’s only one crown and it will come at a heavy cost,” according to the official description.
The trailer also warns viewers that “payback will be a mother.”
As previously reported, new faces joining the cast include Phylicia Rashad (The Beekeeper), Karrueche Tran (Claws), and Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Game).
Returning cast members include Jacob Latimore, Yolonda Ross, Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps, Birgundi Baker, and Luke James.
They’ll be joined by Kadeem Hardison, Chris Lee, Brett Gray, Rotimi, Jackie Long, Jill Marie Jones, and others.
The Chi was created by Emmy winner Lena Waithe and executive produced by Waithe, Common, and co-showrunners Justin Hillian and Jewel Coronel.
The hit series, which premiered in 2018 and is filmed in the Windy City, tells the story of residents from Chicago’s South Side who are all connected by coincidence and bonded by the need for connection.
Season 6 marked a high point for the series, with viewership jumping nearly 25 percent over the previous season, according to the network. Showtime renewed the series for Season 7 just days before Season 6’s 2024 return.
The new season will premiere on-demand and via streaming for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan on Friday, May 16. The series will then make its on-air debut on Sunday, May 18, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
