The newly released trailer for horror parody The Blackening shows a group of friends on a Juneteenth getaway from hell.

The group’s vacation starts out as a celebration of Blackness, but it soon turns into a nightmare when they find a game called “The Blackening.” The vacationers open the box containing the game, and a killer wearing a horrifying black mask appears.

Forced to play by the killer’s rules, the friends soon realize this is no motherf—g game.

“Your time has run out, it’s time to die,” the killer tells the group as he begins to hunt them.

The Blackening stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji.

The comedy skewers horror film tropes — and the idea that Black characters often get slashed first — by posing the question: If the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, then who dies first?

Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man), and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), the comedy premiered in September 2022 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was acquired by Lionsgate for a reported $20 million.

The film is produced by Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, E. Brian Dobbins, Tracy Oliver, Tim Story, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett. Perkins serves as a co-producer, with Vicky Story as associate producer.

The Blackening arrives in theaters on June 16, 2023.
