Spiral, the latest installment of the Saw horror franchise, topped the box office in North America this weekend after taking in an estimated $8.7 million dollars.

The film opened in 2,811 theaters — ringing up an average $3,104 per location — according to industry tracking company Comscore. It was the sixth time in franchise history that a Saw film opened at #1. Internationally, Spiral took in another $3.3 million for a worldwide total of $12 million.

The Chris Rock-led reboot also stars Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, Samuel L. Jackson, and Morgan David Jones. The plot centers on police efforts to stop a Jigsaw copycat killer who unleashes a twisted form of justice.

Rock serves as an executive producer of the Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures film, which is produced by the original Saw team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Darren Lynn Bousman directs from a script written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger.

Spiral is the ninth installment in the hit Saw franchise. The first film was released in 2004, paving the way for the franchise to gross nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The new Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures film moved around the release calendar a couple of times during the coronavirus pandemic, before eventually arriving in theaters on Friday, May 14.

Elsewhere at the box office, the Jason Statham-starring action film Wrath of Man slipped to second place with $3.7 million in its second week in domestic theaters.

Angelina Jolie’s action film Those Who Wish Me Dead was essentially dead on arrival, opening in third place with just $2.8 million. The Warner Bros. release debuted simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service and in 3,188 theaters for a per location average of $878.

In fourth place, the Japanese anime epic Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train took in $1.8 million, followed by Raya and the Last Dragon in fifth place with $1.7 million.

Only 64 percent of all North American Theaters are currently open.
