Tevin Campbell is going Hollywood with a role on OWN’s Queen Sugar.
The R&B singer will appear on season 4 of the series from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay, OWN announced Tuesday in a press release.
Campbell had a string of hit singles in the 1990s, including “Round and Round,” “Just Ask Me To” and “Can We Talk,” and he was nominated for five Grammy Awards.
Despite his accomplishments, Twitter users came for the singer in October 2018, questioning his relevancy and his sexual orientation. Campbell dismissed the homophobic comments and said he’d heard them all before.
“I read the comments. I done heard it all ‘his a– loose,’ he a ‘f-g,’ he gay as hell, y’all homophobes gotta do better. The thing you will never, ever be able to say about me is ‘that boy can’t saing’ that’s the day I will be sitting at home crying and that day will be never,” he wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

Duvernay took note of the comments and responded with a post saying she was “rebuking any Tevin Campbell slander” and “plotting to write him into an episode of Queen Sugar.”
The producer-director made good on her promise and on March 19, OWN shared video of Campbell on the set of the series.
“I’m on the set of Queen Sugar, baby,” Campbell said in the clip. “And I had a talk with all the characters. We’re not going to get into that. This is so exciting for me and I want to thank DuVernay, Ava DuVernay. She’s a doer, she kept her word.”
“I want to thank the cast and the crew for making me feel at home, like I’ve been here for years. Oh my God, y’all don’t even understand how excited I am,” he added.

This isn’t the singer’s first acting role. According to his IMDb page, he previously appeared on episodes of Moesha, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and in the Prince film Graffiti Bridge.
Last week OWN announced Erica Tazel, Kendall Clark and Walter Perez would be joining the cast of Queen Sugar.
Season 4 of the series will premiere Wednesday, June 12 (9 p.m. ET/PT) on OWN.
