A week after Kanye West appeared as musical guest on Saturday Night Live, the hip-hop star’s antics remained a hot topic on the NBC series.
In case you missed the Sept. 29 episode, West praised President Trump, criticized the “liberal” news and said he was “bullied” backstage at SNL for wearing his red “Make America Great Again” hat.
SNL cast member Pete Davidson addressed West’s unscripted pro-Trump rant during the “Weekend Update,” calling the rapper’s comments “awkward.”

Davidson started off by saying a lot of people thought “Weekend Update” host Michael Che should comment on West, but said he has more in common with the rapper because they both suffer from mental illness.
“Even though Che is black and I’m crazy, we both know which side of Kanye is at the wheel right now,” Davidson quipped, adding: “What Kanye said after we went off the air last week was one of the worst, most awkward things that I’ve ever seen here.”
The comedian insisted there was no truth to West’s allegation that he was “bullied” at SNL for wearing his MAGA hat. In fact, Davidson said West wore the hat during rehearsals.
“He wore it all week. Nobody told him not to wear it. I wish I told you. I wish I would have suggested that it might upset some people, like your wife, or every black person ever,” Davidson joked.
He added that West should stick with music and stay out of politics.
“Kanye is a genius, but like a musical genius. Like Joey Chestnut is a hot dog eating genius. But I don’t want to hear Joey Chestnut’s opinion about things that aren’t hot dog related,” he said to applause.
“I know Kanye is saying, ‘yo this is the real me. I’m off the meds.’ Take them! There’s no shame in the medicine game. I’m on ’em. There’s nothing wrong with taking them. If I ever got on a plane and the pilot said, I just want all you to know, ‘this is the REAL ME FLYING!’ I’d jump out. Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass.”
As a clip of West’s comments played in the background, the comedian said he left the stage during Kanye’s speech because he realized “I want a career.”
Davidson then donned a red “Make Kanye 2006 Again” hat, and said he wants to see the old Kanye back.
This past week, the Stronger rapper deleted all of his social media accounts after coming under fire for his SNL comments and for tweeting we should “abolish the 13th amendment,” which ended slavery.
