Chris Rock made a surprise appearance on the season finale of Saturday Night Live to remind the audience what a crazy year it’s been — and dragged Kanye West and former President Donald Trump in the process.
After current cast members reminisced about highlights from season 46, the SNL alum detailed how things have changed since the start of the season when he served as the show’s host for the premiere episode.
“Here’s how messed up the world was when I hosted. I wanted Kanye West to be the musical guest, but he couldn’t do it because he was running for president,” Rock said to laughter. “Remember that?”

He then turned to Trump and made fun of the former president for contracting COVID-19 and losing the election to now President Joe Biden.
“Also, the week I was here, the sitting president who said COVID would disappear, got COVID!” Rock quipped. “That was this season. Then the election was over, Heat Miser loses, right? Big moment for SNL. Clearly the right time to leave, to end this season. But no, these idiots did 12 more shows. I mean, even Jim Carrey knew it was time to go home.” Carrey played Biden during the 2020 presidential race, but announced in December he was out.

When the live studio audience realized Rock was part of the cold open, they welcomed him with wild applause.
After Rock’s portion of the cold open, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson acknowledged members of the SNL family who had passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the show’s music producer Hal Willner as well as family members of the cast and crew.
The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy hosted the finale, with Lil Nas X serving as the night’s musical guest.
