Sara Haines is opening up about a tough chapter in her TV career, when she worked on GMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke.
The current co-host of The View shared her experience on the Question Everything podcast with Danielle Robay, reflecting on the short-lived ABC daytime show that she co-hosted alongside Michael Strahan and Keke Palmer from 2019 to 2020.
“I cried every day,” Haines said. “For the first time, I couldn’t wait to leave.”

The former ABC News correspondent said the tone of the GMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke show shifted after she returned from maternity leave. She described how becoming a mom so early into the launch of the show, changed how others viewed her on set.
“They were like, ‘Oh we can’t have a mom.’ Well guess what, moms do a lot of stuff,” she said. “I hadn’t changed. Everyone else projected a change.”
She praised the staff and her co-hosts, but said the job left her emotionally drained.
“I loved Keke and Michael, talk about laughing until you hurt,” Haines said.
“It felt like I was being dragged behind a car,” she continued. “Work was not a safe haven. Even though I felt like I klutzed around as a mom, I would rather do that with all my heart than what was happening at work.”
Haines joined The View in 2016 before leaving in 2018 to host the third hour of Good Morning America.
As previously reported, the show struggled with ratings and rebranded multiple times, first as GMA Day, then Strahan & Sara, and finally Strahan, Sara & Keke with Palmer’s addition in August 2019.
“I think the problem was it was a failed experiment from the beginning,” Haines said on the podcast. “You can’t put a Kelly and Michael show at that hour… If it was going to be a standalone, it couldn’t be a replication.”
She also said the pressure of being on the show “took me back to a really dark place,” but added, “Funny enough, there were a lot of great moments.”
ABC canceled the show in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Haines returned to The View later that year.
GMA3 now airs as GMA3: What You Need to Know with hosts DeMarco Morgan and Eva Pilgrim.
