Will Smith won the trophy for best actor in a film Sunday night at the 2022 SAG Awards for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.
During his acceptance speech at The Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, Smith thanked the Williams family and his co-stars.
“That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career just now because my name was called for King Richard sitting next to Venus Williams,” he said to applause. The actor and producer then began to shed tears when he called working with the film’s cast “one of the greatest pleasures of my life.”
Smith continued by praising the man he portrayed onscreen. “Richard Williams is a dreamer like no one has ever known. He has a power of belief that borders on insanity and sometimes tips over the border, which is absolutely necessary to take something from impossible to possible,” Smith said as he wiped away tears.
