Ryan Coogler has found the next Black Panther.
During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation on Saturday, July 25, the director revealed actor David Jonsson will play an adult version of T’Challa’s son in Black Panther 3.
“The last time we were together and we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played,” Coogler said. “In this next film, he grows up. He comes of age and we had to find an incredible actor. I want you guys to give a warm welcome to our new Black Panther, Mr. David Jonsson.”
The actor expressed gratitude to Coogler and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for the opportunity to join the franchise.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said onstage. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talking.”
Letitia Wright, who will reprise her role as Shuri, and Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, also attended the event.
Jonsson, 32, grew up in East London and is of Nigerian, Sierra Leonean and Caribbean descent.
He is best known for his roles in Stephen King’s doomsday thriller The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus, and the first two seasons of British financial thriller, Industry.
Coogler is returning to direct the third movie in the series. The first two films made a combined $2.1 billion dollars, according to The-Numbers.com.
Denzel Washington did not attend the panel, but Coogler previously revealed the Oscar-winning actor will have a role in the new film.
Chadwick Boseman starred in the first Black Panther (2018) as T’Challa. The South Carolina native died from colon cancer in August 2020 at age 43.
Fans can see Jonsson in Black Panther 3, when it arrives in theaters on Dec. 15, 2028.
