Set in 1930s rural Georgia, the Warner Bros. film is based on the novel of the same name from author Alice Walker. Originally published in 1982, the book earned a Pulitzer Prize and later became a film directed by Steven Spielberg in 1985.
In the original adaptation, Whoopi Goldberg starred as Celie — a woman who endured physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her father and later her husband. Winfrey starred as Sofia, Margaret Avery played Shug, and Akosua Busia portrayed Nettie.
A musical version premiered on Broadway in 2005 and won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
Winfrey, Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones produced the new film.
OWN will celebrate the making of the movie, in the special premiering Friday, Dec. 8 at 10pm ET/PT.
