Netflix released the first full-length trailer Tuesday for its upcoming documentary series on Aaron Hernandez.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez explores the rise and fall of the former New England Patriots tight end, who killed himself in prison in 2017.

At the time of his death, Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was also accused in the 2012 double murder of two Boston-area men, but was acquitted.

Through courtroom footage, Hernandez’s phone calls from prison, and interviews with his former teammates, Netflix’s three-part documentary series attempts to get inside the mind of the troubled athlete and explain why he threw it all away.

“I can’t wait to be free,” Hernandez says in a phone call.

With a history of family abuse, rage and a fascination with guns and gang life, Hernandez is described in the trailer as “a ticking time bomb.”

“No one has allegedly murdered two people and then played an entire season as a professional athlete,” one interview subject says.

Another person says, “Aaron was absolutely operating on the edge.” The trailer also cites his history of concussion-related injuries, which can lead to CTE.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez is directed by Geno McDermott. The series premieres Jan. 15 on Netflix.
