The tension between President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was thick Tuesday night when Trump visited Capitol Hill for this third State of the Union address.

Trump refused to shake Pelosi’s hand after she introduced him. The speaker then tweeted out a picture of the president ignoring her and added the caption, “Democrats will never stop extending the hand of friendship to get the job done #ForThePeople. We will work to find common ground where we can, but will stand our ground where we cannot.”

At the end of the address, Pelosi tore up her copy of Trump’s speech and tossed it aside.

She later released a statement calling Trump’s speech a “manifesto of mistruths.” The tension between the two came in the midst of Trump’s Senate impeachment trial.

In another unusual moment Tuesday night, Trump awarded conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the House chamber, instead of at the usual Medal of Freedom ceremony.

Limbaugh seemed stunned and apparently had no idea he would be receiving the nation’s highest civilian honor. Trump had first lady Melania Trump, who was sitting next to Limbaugh, put the medal around his neck. The move came one day after Limbaugh announced he’s battling advanced lung cancer.

While some Republican lawmakers cheered Limbaugh on, many Democrats in the chamber shouted “No.”
