NAACP Image Awards 2024: ‘The Color Purple’ Dominates the Nominations

The nominations were announced Thursday morning for the 55th NAACP Image Awards, with The Color Purple topping the list of nominees.

The movie musical received 16 nods, including outstanding motion picture and outstanding cast in a motion picture. The film’s stars Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, and Colman Domingo are also nominated for entertainer of the year and will compete against Keke Palmer and Usher.

The recognition for The Color Purple comes just days after Danielle Brooks picked up the only Oscar nomination for the film, with a supporting actress nod.

In the television categories, ABC’s  Abbott Elementary led with nine nominations, including outstanding comedy series. Amazon’s Harlem and Swarm picked up multiple nominations as well.

Victoria Monét earned a leading six nods in the music categories, including outstanding new artist. Monét is also up for outstanding female artist, competing with Ari Lennox, H.E.R., Janelle Monáe and Tems.

The Image Awards celebrate outstanding achievements by people of color in categories including film, television, music, literature and podcasts.

The winners will be announced during a two–hour live broadcast on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 8:00 PM ET/ PT on BET and CBS.
