Michael K. Williams, known for his roles on Lovecraft Country and The Wire, died last September after an accidental drug overdose. Now, for the first time, the public will hear from the man who found the actor unresponsive in his New York City apartment.

Dominic Dupont, Williams’ nephew, realized something was wrong on Sep. 6, 2021 and went to the actor’s home. On Wednesday’s episode of Red Table Talk, Dupont sits down for an interview and describes what happened.

“I went upstairs, opened up his door, and it was quiet. Michael always played music — but that wasn’t the case. I stuck my head in and I said, ‘uncle Mike, are you in here?’ And I observed him deceased,” Dupont says.

Co-host Jada Pinkett Smith asks him what it was like that day and what was happening before he found Williams.

Dupont answers calmly, saying that he and his wife were shopping before they went to check in on his uncle. Dupont says as soon as they got inside Williams’ home, he called 911. The operators told him to start life-saving compressions, but he knew it was already too late.

“I’m telling you, he’s deceased. He’s gone,” Dupont remembered telling the authorities. “He’s cold.”

He said reporters and photographers immediately started gathering outside Williams’ home.

“I spoke to Michael’s publicist, and she said, ‘Dominic, you know, this is gonna be on the news in, like, another hour, I’m telling you.’ And I looked out his window, and I saw all the reporters, and thought about the responsibility. And my responsibility, my accountability to get the word out about how this doesn’t have to be you or your loved one,” Dupont said.

The episode of RTT is titled “Fentanyl: An Urgent Warning for All.” The guests include the grief-stricken parents of a 15-year-old girl who died after taking  counterfeit Percocet. And comedian Kate Quigley discusses being the lone survivor of a fentanyl poisoning that killed three of her friends in Venice Beach, California, two days before Williams was found dead.

After taking fentanyl-laced cocaine at a house party, Quigley was hospitalized in critical condition. Comedian Fuquan Johnson, 43; Natalie Williamson, 33, of Los Angeles; and Enrico Colangeli, 48, of Medford, Mass all overdosed at the party. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office said at the time that Johnson, Colangeli, and Williamson, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their times of death were listed between 12:21 a.m. and 12:25 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.

Michael K. Williams, 54, rose to prominence on The Wire as Omar, an openly gay robber who targeted drug dealers. On September 24, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that he died from a lethal combination of fentanyl, heroin and cocaine in his system. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid about 80-100 times stronger than morphine, according to the DEA.
