Maurice Johnson originated the role of Dr. Ted Richardson. The actor became known to fans as “Turtleneck Ted” because of the turtleneck sweaters his character wore on the show.

But in March, reports began to surface that Johnson was being replaced. No reason was given as to why.

Earlier this week, the series was renewed for a second season. CBS announced the renewal on May 12, saying the program improved viewership in its time period by 48 percent since it replaced The Talk in the timeslot.

The drama follows the Duprees, a powerful and affluent Black family living in a gated community in a Maryland suburb outside Washington, D.C. Hollywood veterans Tamara Tunie and Clifton Davis star as heads of the family.

The cast also includes Karla Mosley, Alex Alegria, Lauren Buglioli, Brandon Claybon, Timon Kyle Durrett, Sean Freeman, Ben Gavin, Marquita Goings, Jibre Hordges, Jen Jacob, Mike Manning, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad and Arielle Prepetit.

Michele Val Jean, an award-winning writer on The Bold & the Beautiful, General Hospital, and Ambitions is the writer, showrunner and executive producer.

Beyond the Gates was developed in a partnership between CBS Studios and the NAACP.

The soap opera premiered on Feb. 24 and airs weekdays from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET / 1:00–2:00 p.m. PT on CBS. It also streams on Paramount+.
