Jonathan Majors got emotional during his first interview since he was found guilty last month of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

Speaking to ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday, Jan. 8, Majors expressed his surprise at the verdict, which could result in a sentence of up to a year in jail.

“I was absolutely shocked and afraid,” he said. “How is that possible? Based off the evidence, based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence.”

During the interview, Majors responded to questions about Jabbari’s injuries. When asked about how the injuries took place, he initially said, “I wish that I knew,” but later commented, “I shouldn’t have been in the car. I shouldn’t have stepped out of the relationship. I shouldn’t have been in the relationship. If I’m not in the car, none of this is happening.”

He later clarified that he couldn’t say he was responsible for any of Jabbari’s injuries.

The charges stem from an incident on March 25, 2023, during which Majors was riding in a a chauffeured SUV with Jabbari.

The dancer and movement coach testified that Majors physically assaulted her after she saw a text message on his phone from another woman.

The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania actor also said he sustained injuries during the incident in the car, highlighting photos, including a scratch on his neck.

After a two-week jury trial, Majors was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and harassment.

The Creed III actor, who teared up multiple times during the interview, denied being physically abusive in any of his relationships, stating, “I’ve witnessed it, but never participated.”

He also said he has experienced suicidal ideations since childhood, but noted that he had sought help.

Majors mentioned his current partner, Meagan Good, and described her as “an angel,” who had supported him. He stated, “She’s held me down like Coretta [Scott King].”

Regarding the timing of the interview before his sentencing on Feb. 6, Majors said, “I felt like it was time,” citing personal and career developments.

Legal experts who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter noted the unusual timing, however, suggesting it could impact the judge’s decision.

Disney’s Marvel Studios dropped Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films following the verdict.

Monday’s interview, which aired on Disney-owned ABC News, raised eyebrows due to its association with the studio.

Despite the challenges, Majors expressed optimism about his future in Hollywood. When asked if he thought he would have the opportunity to resume his acting career, he said,  “Yeah. I do. I pray I do.”

The interview initially aired on Good Morning America, with additional segments scheduled for GMA3 and an extended version streaming on ABC News Live’s “Prime.” IMPACT x Nightline will feature a half-hour special with unaired segments on Jan. 11 on Hulu.
