Nearly 16 years after I Am Legend made a killing at the box office, the film’s writer and producer says there’s a sequel percolating at Warner Bros.

In an interview published by Deadline Wednesday, Akiva Goldsman chatted about his upcoming projects, including an I Am Legend sequel starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan.

But there’s a twist, Goldsman revealed the new film will follow the alternate ending featured on the DVD — where Smith’s character survived the deadly virus.

“This will start a few decades later than the first,” he said about the sequel. “I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”

A year ago, Goldsman also said there was a sequel in the works, as previously reported. This time he insists the film is moving forward and noted that it will closely follow Richard Matheson’s book that the first movie was based on.

“We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film,” Goldsman explained. “What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore.”

I Am Legend premiered in December 2007, and starred Will Smith, Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Dash Mihok, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield.

Directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman, the film centered on a plague that killed most of humanity and transformed others into monsters.

The post-apocalyptic action thriller made $585.4 million worldwide.
