The winners were announced Sunday night for the 79th annual Golden Globes without the usual fanfare or even a television audience because of an ongoing Hollywood boycott.
Will Smith won the lead actor in a motion picture – drama award for his role as Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in the film King Richard. Nicole Kidman won best actress in a motion picture – drama for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. In the television category, Amazon Prime Video’s The Underground Railroad was named best limited series. West Side Story and The Power of the Dog led the competition on the film side, with three awards each.
No stars attended the ceremony and NBC opted not to broadcast the awards following a series of scandals surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Globes.

A series of explosive reports in February 2021 by the Los Angeles Times revealed details on the group’s membership ranks and questionable ethics, as previously reported. The HFPA faced fallout for not having any Black members in its group of 87 international journalists. Others told the Times, the HFPA divided nearly $2 million among its members last year for serving on various committees, potentially violating tax laws for nonprofits.
“Last year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was challenged to change – and we did,” Helen Hoehne, president of the HFPA said in a press release Sunday. “Both internally, within the association, as well as adding 21 members to bring fresh perspectives.”
This weekend’s awards were presented at the the Beverly Hilton Hotel in a private ceremony in Beverly Hills made up of HFPA members and grant recipients, but there was no livestream for the public. Read below for the full list of winners below.
