Godfather of Harlem is adding an up-and-coming kingpin to the season 4 storyline.

The MGM+ crime drama has cast actor Rome Flynn as a young Frank Lucas, the network announced on Tuesday, May 28.

The new season will find Lucas leaving tiny La Grange, North Carolina for Harlem, where he becomes a major player in the drug game. He initially clashes with Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson, played by Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, but the two later become allies.

“I’m filled with gratitude! Thrilled to be a part of the Godfather of Harlem universe and breathe new life into the legend of Frank Lucas. I have so much admiration for Forest Whitaker,” Flynn said in a press release, adding that the role is an “actor’s dream.”

“When I saw Rome’s audition, I immediately knew we’d found our man – equal parts charming and ruthless, savvy and suave. Rome is a wonderful actor who can go toe-to-toe with Forest Whitaker and our other great performers,” said executive producer Chris Brancato.

Flynn took home a Daytime Emmy Award for his role as “Zende Forrester” on The Bold and the Beautiful. The Illinois native’s other credits include The Haves and the Have Nots, How to Get Away with Murder, The Rookie, Grey’s Anatomy, With Love and Chicago Fire.

In real life, Frank Lucas rose to become a drug lord in New York City in the 1970s. He was known for cutting out the middleman by sidestepping the mafia in New York, to buy heroin directly from his connections in Southeast Asia. He died at age 88 in 2019.

Denzel Washington portrayed Lucas in the 2007 film American Gangster.

On Godfather of Harlem, his story begins ten years earlier than the film.

According to the official description for season 4, “Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas (Flynn). After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.”

In addition to Whitaker and Crowe-Legacy, season 4 will see the return of Ilfenesh Hadera (Mayme Johnson), Lucy Fry (Stella Gigante), and Erik LaRay Harvey (Del Chance), with more cast details to be announced later.

Godfather of Harlem was created by Chris Brancato and the late Paul Eckstein.

The series is one of MGM+’s top performing original shows. It’s also the platform’s most popular show among African American audiences, according to figures compiled by MGM+. During the third season, 54 percent of the show’s audience was African American.

ABC Signature produces the drama series. Swizz Beatz serves as executive music producer. Stephanie Diaz-Matos is music supervisor.

A premiere date for season 4 will be announced later.
