Film Academy Invites 928 New Members, Just Not Kobe Bryant

In the latest effort to add diversity to its ranks, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday it invited a record 928 actors, directors and executives to become members.

Those invited include Girls Trip stars Tiffany Haddish, Regina Hall and Jada Pinkett Smith, comedian Dave Chappelle, City of God actress Alice Braga and comedian George Lopez.

This is the largest and most diverse class of new members in the history of the academy – which hands out the Oscars.

Last year the group invited 774 new members, which set a previous record.

The 2018 class is part of the academy’s continuing campaign to admit more women and people of color to its predominately white male membership, following the #OscarsSoWhite uproar.

Of those invited, 49 percent are women and 38 percent are people of color, according to the academy. If all of the invitees accept, the new class would boost academy membership to be 31 percent female and 16 percent people of color.

One name that was not on the list was Kobe Bryant.

The Los Angeles Lakers legend won an Oscar earlier this year for the animated short film Dear Basketball.

The short films and feature animation branch of the academy recommended him for membership, but last week news emerged that Bryant was ultimately denied membership by a committee because he only has one film credit.

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at special receptions this fall.

Below is the full list of those invited. Ten people (noted by an asterisk) were invited to join multiple branches of the academy, and must select one branch upon accepting membership.
