Dave Chappelle says the homelessness crisis in San Francisco is so bad, the city has become frightful.

The comedian shared that observation during a surprise stand-up show in the city.

“What the f–k happened to this place?” Chappelle said to the audience at the Masonic Auditorium, according to an SFGate article on the performance.

Chappelle told the audience he considered San Francisco his second home because he did hundreds of shows there early in his career.

But after returning to the Bay Area for Thursday night’s performance, Chappelle said San Fran has descended into “half Glee, half zombie movie.”

The Chappelle’s Show comic said he saw a homeless person defecating outside an Indian restaurant in the Tenderloin District as he walked into the eatery.

“Y’all [N-words] need a Batman!” he quipped.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the city’s 2022 homeless count found a total of 7,800 unhoused individuals.

Among the nation’s largest cities that count their unhoused populations, “only L.A. had a higher rate of unsheltered homeless people at 0.67 percent,” the article said.

Perhaps the comments from Dave Chappelle were a coincidence, but CNN aired a special this evening on homelessness and crime in San Francisco.

The episode titled “What Happened to San Francisco” is part of the network’s new Sunday primetime series The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.

This weekend’s episode explored the “political and social issues plaguing the city of San Francisco,” according to a press release from CNN.

The official description of the episode said the city is “at the forefront of the nation’s homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction crises,” adding, “some residents worry Northern California’s largest municipality could become a so-called failed city.”

What Happened to San Francisco aired Sunday, May 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The episode is available On Demand beginning Monday, May 15 to pay TV subscribers via CNN.com, CNN apps, and cable platforms.
