Captain America: Brave New World showed super strength at the box office this weekend, scoring the best opening of 2025.

The Disney/Marvel release rang up a projected 3-day total of $88.5 million from 4,105 theaters, box office tracking company Comscore reported on Sunday.

When Monday’s Presidents Day holiday is factored in, the film is expected to climb to $100 million in four days.

Outside the U.S. and Canada, the superhero epic earned another $92.4 million, for an expected 4-day global total of $192.4 million.

The film carried a reported production budget of $180 million and has already made that back.

“Given the mixed performance of some of the MCU titles in the post-pandemic era, the performance of Captain America: Brave New World allows Marvel to essentially hit the reset and build momentum toward the release of Thunderbolts* on May 2; The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25; and then of course the big daddy — Avengers: Doomsday — to kick off the summer movie season in 2026,” Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore senior media analyst, told Urban Hollywood 411 on Sunday.

Anthony Mackie leads the cast as Captain America/Sam Wilson, taking over from Chris Evans.

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), Wilson finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must find out the reason behind this “nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red,” according to the official description.

The cast also includes Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), Shira Haas (Unorthodox) Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad and Godfather of Harlem), Carl Lumbly (Alias), Xosha Roquemore (Cherish the Day), Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk), and Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings).

Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) directed the film and was part of the writing team.

The epic brushed off a lukewarm 51 percent score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an underwhelming “B-” CinemaScore from audiences.

Kathia Woods, who reviewed the film for The Philadelphia Tribune, said Mackie brought something new to the franchise after starring in Disney+ MCU series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Although she noted the Marvel name comes with a built-in audience.

“Marvel is always going to get people through the door. People want to know the tie-in to the TV show. They’re also looking for hints because there’s going to be a new Avengers movie and they want to know who makes cameos in Captain America,” Woods said by phone Sunday. “People come for the Easter eggs and they love anybody in a superhero costume.”

Last week at the film’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, Mackie said he had an “absolutely amazing” experience filming Captain America: Brave New World.

“I’ve worked a long time for this moment,” the actor shared. “I’m just excited that Sam Wilson gets his moment to shine.”

Elsewhere this weekend, Sony’s Paddington in Peru opened in a distant second place with a three-day domestic total of $13 million, Comscore reported.

This third installment of the franchise finds the marmalade-loving, talking bear returning to Peru to visit his  beloved Aunt Lucy. The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, and Imelda Staunton.

The slasher thriller Heart Eyes took third place with $10 million Friday through Sunday in its second weekend.

Dog Man was fourth with $9.7 million after spending its first two weeks in first place. The Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, rounded out the top 5 opening with $7.2 million this weekend in the United States and Canada.

So far this year, theatrical releases have earned $867.8 million at the domestic box office through Sunday. That’s up 22 percent from this time last year, Comscore reported.
