Ava DuVernay is taking her love of Prince to the small screen.
DuVernay — who directed Selma and A Wrinkle in Time — confirmed to Deadline Monday that she’s working on a documentary about Prince for Netflix.
“Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses,” the producer-screenwriter said in a statement. “He was like no other. He shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music.”
She continued: “The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”

DuVernay has already visited the Purple Rain performer’s studio and home complex in Paisley Park, Minnesota with her production team, and the late singer’s estate has granted her full access to interview footage, unreleased music, and photos.
News of the doc comes two-and-half years after Prince died in April 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose. Unbeknownst to the legendary entertainer, the counterfeit Vicodin pills he took were laced with the dangerous opioid.
In April, authorities announced they wouldn’t file any charges in connection with the legendary entertainer’s death due to lack of evidence.
This isn’t the first time DuVernay has partnered with Netflix. In addition to the project about Prince, the Hollywood heavyweight executive produced, wrote, and directed a four-part series about five Harlem teenagers of color convicted of a rape they did not commit.
Titled the Central Park Five, it will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2019.
