Anthony Mackie, star of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, has been confirmed to star as Captain America in the forthcoming Disney/Marvel Studios film Captain America 4.

The actor, who first took on the mantle of Captain America in the six-episode Disney+ miniseries, was expected to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it wasn’t until earlier this week that multiple media outlets began to report Mackie and Marvel Studios had settled on a new deal.

Mackie first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In that film, he played Sam Wilson, AKA The Falcon, a veteran who helped Chris Evans’ Captain America no matter the cost.

Mackie would go on to portray the character in five subsequent films before taking him to the small screen earlier this year in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Mackie, already a superstar in his own right, joins a host of actors who are emerging as the “new blood” for the multi-movie, multi-platform media franchise.

As actors like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. hang up their larger-than-life superhero roles after a decade or more, the producers at Marvel Studios seem eager to fill their shoes with new talent, and Mackie will likely be one of the faces of Marvel Studios for a number of years to come.

Details on Captain America 4 are scarce; Mackie’s casting is the first word on the film since its existence was confirmed by THR in April.

A director has not yet been tapped, though we do know that Falcon and the Winter Soldier writer and creator Malcolm Spellman will be scripting the movie along with series staff writer Dalan Musson. The film hasn’t even officially been announced yet, and this is likely why Marvel Studios has declined to comment on the reports regarding Mackie’s new contract.
