Over the next few years, Ryan Coogler will expand the Wakanda legacy with a new Disney+ series.
The Walt Disney Company announced Monday the Black Panther writer-director has signed a five-year overall television deal with the studio, via his production arm Proximity Media. The agreement includes Coogler developing a series for the Disney+ streaming service based on the Kingdom of Wakanda.
“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella,” Coogler said in a press release on behalf of his production company.
A release date has not yet been set for the untitled series.

Proximity is a multi-media company founded by Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis and Peter Nicks, according to the release.
The Fruitvale Station director and writer is also set to start production on the sequel to the blockbuster Marvel film. However, there are no plans to recast the role of T’Challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman, according to Vulture.com.
“Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally,” the website quoted Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as saying during Disney’s Investor Day. “His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past.”
Black Panther 2 is scheduled to open July 8, 2022.
