Angela Bassett will play a shrewd politician in the upcoming Netflix conspiracy thriller Zero Day.
The 9-1-1 star has been cast as President Mitchell — a “brilliant and perceptive” leader — in the six-part limited series, Netflix announced Tuesday.
The series comes after Bassett’s Oscar-nominated turn as Queen Ramonda in last year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The actress joins Oscar winner Robert De Niro, who stars in and produces Zero Day. The project marks De Niro’s first TV series.
Additional cast members include Matthew Modine, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, and Connie Britton (Bassett’s former 9-1-1 co-star)

Here’s the official description: “Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
The series is created and executive produced by Eric Newman (Narcos and Narcos: Mexico), Noah Oppenheim (Jackie and The Maze Runner), and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Schmidt.
Homeland’s Lesli Linka Glatter directs and executive produces. Filming is currently underway in New York.
