Al Roker ‘On the Way To Recovery’ After Hospitalization

Al Roker on Today Show

Al Roker has revealed why he’s been absent from the Today show.

The longtime weatherman and anchor shared details on Instagram Friday, saying he was hospitalized for blood clots in his leg and lungs.

“So many of you have been thoughtfully asking where I’ve been,” he captioned a picture of a bouquet of flowers and an NBC News weather mug. “Last week I was admitted to the hospital with a blood clot in my leg which sent some clots into my lungs.”

Roker, 68, added that he’s on the mend.

“I am so fortunate to be getting terrific medical care and on the way to recovery. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers and hope to see you soon,” he continued.

His Today co-anchors took to the comments section of the post to say they are thinking of him.

“Al Roker– hurry back to us… counting the days xoxoxo,” Hoda Kotb replied.

“You’re the strongest person we know. We miss you and will see you soon,” Savannah Guthrie wrote.

“Love you brother…can’t wait to have you back!” added Craig Melvin.

Roker’s wife, ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts, also commented on the post.

“So grateful for the top notch medical care and prayer warriors from every corner. We love you dearly sweet Al and can’t wait to get you home,” Roberts wrote.

In 2020, Roker was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He noted that he went public with his health journey to encourage others, particularly Black men, to get checkups.

“It’s a little more common than people realize,” Roker said. “So, I just decided that I wanted to go public with this because one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. But for African American men, that number is one in seven and it’s more deadly. So if you detect it early, this is a really treatable disease.”

A year earlier, he had hip replacement surgery after pain began to slow him down. “All of a sudden I went from a little twinge to like excruciating pain,” he said at the time.
