Octavia Spencer has addressed the cancellation of Ride or Die, after Prime Video decided not to move forward with a second season of the action comedy.
Spencer posted a statement to Instagram on Monday, Sept. 21, reflecting on the experience of bringing the series to audiences. The Oscar-winning actress began the post by saying she had been sick over the weekend as news of the cancellation broke.
“Apparently, THIS was the best weekend for me to get sick because, well, distractions!” she wrote. “I hope every creative out there gets to have the incredible experience that I’ve had bringing this project to life with the unwavering support from Skydance/Paramount these past three years.”
Spencer went on to thank the show’s cast, crew and viewers at home.
“Projects like this shouldn’t be the exception, they should be the rule!” she continued. “For all the women out there who felt seen, laughed out loud, lived out loud with Debbie and Judith, thank you. This was a fun one!”
She praised creator and executive producer Tessa Coates and Jennifer Salke, founder of Sullivan Street Productions and former head of Amazon MGM Studios.
“Thank you Tessa Coates! Massive thank you to you, Jen Salke!” Spencer added. “You’ve always had exquisite taste!”
Prime Video canceled Ride or Die after one season, with the news making headlines on Saturday. The decision came despite the show have strong streaming numbers, as previously reported.
The eight-episode series premiered on July 15 and followed longtime best friends Debbie Claybourne (Spencer) and Judith Burton (Hannah Waddingham). Their friendship is tested when Debbie discovers Judith has been hiding a dangerous secret: She is a contract killer.
Spencer and Waddingham were also executive producers on the show.
The cancellation reportedly came as a surprise to those involved with the series. Still, the show may not be completely dead. Producer Paramount Television Studios is reportedly shopping Ride or Die to other networks and streaming platforms in hopes of finding the show a new home.
