Jamie Foxx is ready to talk about the mystery illness that nearly took his life — via comedy — in his upcoming stand-up special What Had Happened Was.
Netflix released a new trailer for the special on Thursday, Dec. 5.
The 40-second teaser opens with headlines and newscaster voiceovers about Foxx’s health scare that occurred in April 2023, when the Oscar-winning star was hospitalized in Atlanta.
“I’m back. I’m so glad to see you all there. I’m so glad to be here. What happened was,” Foxx says in the video.
The actor and singer recorded the stand-up special in October over multiple days in Atlanta. Backstage, he spoke with CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King about what it was like talking about his medical emergency on stage in front of an audience.
“It was an excruciating time, to be able to open those wounds every single day,” he said. “It was excruciating because the worry is what gets you. Yeah, we’ve got a great show in the room, but we don’t know what they may laugh or what they may not laugh at.”
Foxx had been right in the middle of filming another Netflix project – the spy comedy Back in Action – when he fell ill.
Following his hospitalization, the Ray star was transferred to a physical rehabilitation center specializing in stroke recovery in Chicago.
The Oscar winner wouldn’t return to the project until this past January, so with production halted, the release date of Nov. 15, 2024, was pushed back to Jan. 17, 2025. The film also stars Cameron Diaz in her first role since the 2014 musical Annie.
What Had Happened Was will premiere on Netflix Dec. 10.
