Wanda Sykes gets political in the teaser trailer for her new stand-up special, Legacy.
Netflix released a preview of the special earlier today, saying it premieres on May 19. The video shows Sykes riffing about the current political climate in Washington.
The comedian compares the nation to a horror movie and says things are so bad, abolitionist Harriet Tubman needs to clock back in and intervene — or at least get The Underground Railroad going again.
“We need Harriet Tubman to get us out this b–ch!” she quips. “I don’t know about y’all, but what the hell is going on out there now? I feel like I’ve been stuck in the shittiest escape room ever.”
The “escape room” joke was apparently in reference to the 2019 horror film by the same name, about people forced to use their wits to survive a maze of deadly mystery rooms.
In another part of the teaser, The Upshaws alum says people around her have been saying things will change after the midterm elections in November, but Sykes is skeptical.
“I’m like, ‘Do you really think we’re going to survive to the midterms? Not with RFK Jr. as our secretary of health,'” she tells the audience.
The special was filmed at the comedian’s alma mater of Hampton University — an HBCU in Hampton, Virginia — complete with a marching band.
The official description reads, “With the trademark wit and fearless insight that have earned her multiple Emmy wins and nominations, Sykes delivers an hour of bold, smart, and laugh-out-loud comedy that cements her legacy as a comedy icon.”
Filmmaker Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust and Queen Sugar) directed the special. Sykes produced it along with Page Hurwitz, who was an executive producer on The Upshaws.
