Tyrese Gibson began his latest interview on The Breakfast Club with a smile, but the singer and actor would later break down in tears.

The Transformers and Baby Boy star stopped by the morning radio program on Tuesday, Aug. 20, to discuss his new film 1992 and his album Beautiful Pain — both of which will be released on Friday, Aug. 30.

Tyrese said the album was inspired by his contentious divorce from second wife, Samantha Lee, in 2020.

“This album has helped me discover the beauty in my pain, that’s why it’s called Beautiful Pain,” he explained.

Later in the interview, the conversation turned to 1992.

Tyrese produced the thriller about a crime that unfolds amid the chaos of the 1992 L.A. Riots. The film also stars Ray Liotta in one of his final roles, before he died in May 2022.

“Ray passed away and this is the last piece of art he left the world with,” Tyrese said in the interview.

The Breakfast Club co-host Charlamagne Tha God then mentioned Tyrese has experienced a lot of grief after getting divorced, losing his mother, his two sisters, Ray Liotta, filmmaker John Singleton, and Tyrese’s Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker.

“Have you really taken the time to deal with all of that grief or are you just trying to stay busy to avoid it?” Charlamagne asked.

Tyrese then began to cry.

“I’m doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get,” he said through tears. “Black men cry.”

After declining a tissue to wipe away his tears, Tyrese talked about the pain he experienced when his mother died in 2022.

“There is no square footage I could ever live in, there is no rims, no jewelry and no car. There is no net worth, there is no press release, there is no co-star, there is no collaboration in the world that could ever replace my momma,” he said, adding, “that could ever fill the void of what it’s like to wake up and get married and want to be in something for the rest of your life, and it goes away.”

The multi-hyphenate said the pain from his divorce has also been unbearable.

“When divorces happen, women aren’t the only ones that are devastated. When a miscarriage happens, women are not the only ones that you should be checking on. When you can’t put food on the table because your career goes up and then it goes down, stop calling and skipping over the man and just checking on the woman,” he said. “This is real s–t out here.”

Tyrese discusses the grieving process in the video below at the 43:42 mark.
