Just over a month after Richard Simmons died in Los Angeles at age 76, his cause of death has been released.
The fitness guru’s passing was ruled accidental due to complications from recent falls, with heart disease as a contributing fact, Simmons family spokesperson Tom Estey told People magazine on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office. The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor,” Simmons’ family spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday.
“The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” the statement continued.

About 1 in 5 people in the United States died from heart disease in 2022, according to the CDC. The term “heart disease” refers to the several types of different heart conditions with the most common being coronary artery disease.
Simmons passed away on July 13 in his home and was found by his longtime housekeeper, confirmed Estey.
He built a fitness empire with his line of workout videos, most notably his Sweatin’ to the Oldies series. He had a fitness studio called Slimmons, wrote several cookbooks, and even had a cruise line.
The fitness guru left the limelight in 2014 and it wasn’t until the release of the 2022 documentary, TMZ Investigates: What Really Happened to Richard Simmons, that fans began to hear from him again.
One of his last interviews with People just days before he died. He told the outlet how he planned to celebrate his 76th birthday.
Simmons passed away one day after he turned 76.
