Twisters stormed the box office and earned a first place finish after ringing up a better-than-expected estimated total of $80.5 million.
The Universal Pictures disaster film opened in 4,151 locations across North America, for a stunning per theater average of $19,393, according to box office tracking company Comscore.
That marked the biggest domestic debut ever for a natural disaster picture (not adjusted for inflation), per The Hollywood Reporter. The record was previously held by The Day After Tomorrow, which opened in 2004 with $68.4 million.
Twisters stars Glen Powell (Anyone But You and Top Gun: Maverick) alongside British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing).

The film is a sequel to the 1996 hit Twister, and centers on a “tornado wrangler” or storm chaser, who is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies.
Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney and Harry Hadden-Paton also have roles in the film.
Lee Isaac Chung directed the sequel from a script written by Mark L. Smith.
Moviegoers liked what they saw, giving Twisters an “A-” CinemaScore.
The film will face tough competition for eyeballs next weekend, when Marvel superhero saga Deadpool & Wolverine debuts. But this weekend, it left the competition in the dust.
Despicable Me 4 slipped to second place with $23.8 million, after spending two weeks in the top spot,
Comscore reported.
Inside Out 2 was third with $12.8 million in its sixth week.
Horror film Longlegs was fourth with $11.7 million in its second week, and A Quiet Place: Day One rounded out the top five with $6.1 million in its fourth week.
