Trump’s Offer to ‘Vouch’ for A$AP Rocky May Not Be Enough

As rapper A$AP Rocky languishes in a Swedish jail, reports have emerged saying President Trump’s help may not make a difference.

After speaking with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven by phone, Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning to say he would “personally vouch” for the rapper’s bail.

“Just had a very good call with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven who assured me that American citizen A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly. Likewise, I assured him that A$AP was not a flight risk and offered to personally vouch for his bail, or an alternative,” Trump tweeted.

In a second tweet, Trump said the two sides had agreed to hold additional talks.

“Our teams will be talking further, and we agreed to speak again in the next 48 hours!”

But now, the prime minister’s spokesperson says the rapper won’t be getting any special treatment.

“It was a friendly and respectful phone call that lasted about 20 minutes,” the spokesperson said in a statement posted on Twitter by CNN reporter Simon Cullen.

“The prime minister made sure to point out that the Swedish judicial system, prosecutors and courts, are completely independent,” the statement continued. “He also pointed out that everyone is equal before the law and that the government neither can nor will try to influence the judicial process.”

The spokesperson also threw cold water on Trump’s claim that there is another call planned.

“It is possible there will be follow up calls but right now there is not one scheduled or planned,” the statement said.

The Grammy-nominated Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, has been jailed since he voluntarily went to a police station for questioning on July 2, following a street brawl in Stockholm.

Viral video of the incident showed the Harlem rapper grabbing a man and tossing him to the ground.

Rocky said only part of the video had been posted online by gossip websites. In response, he uploaded his own clips of the brawl to Instagram, saying he was defending himself because he was attacked by “drug addicts.”

The hip-hop star was in the country to perform at a music festival.
