Rapper YG was briefly detained early Thursday morning in Burbank, California, while authorities served a search warrant in connection with the 2021 killing of fellow hip-hop artist Drakeo the Ruler.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) served the warrant on July 23, with support from members of the Burbank Police Department SWAT team, the CHP told NBC Los Angeles.
Law enforcement executed the warrant at a commercial building that belongs to YG, which is short for “young gangster.”
The Compton rapper was not arrested and the CHP said he is not a suspect in the murder case. The department declined to comment on why the building was searched.
YG, whose real name is Keenon Ray Jackson, was released after the search ended.
TMZ published photos of the rapper standing outside the building as investigators and a uniformed officer stood watch. YG appeared to be in handcuffs.
The search unfolded just hours before the “Toot It and Boot It” rapper was scheduled to take the stage in a Verzuz rap battle against fellow Compton performer The Game. Videos posted on social media showed the battle went on Thursday night as planned.
Meanwhile, the status of the murder case is unknown. Drakeo the Ruler, 28, was fatally stabbed at the “Once Upon a Time in LA” music festival in Los Angeles in December 2021.
The stabbing occurred backstage at the hip-hop festival. The Los Angeles rapper, born Darrell Caldwell, was attacked by “a group of people,” as previously reported. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and later pronounced dead.
Drakeo had been scheduled to perform at the festival alongside 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, YG, George Clinton, Al Green and others. After the stabbing, the LAPD stepped in and the festival was halted.
