A grand jury in New York City has voted to indict former President Donald Trump following an investigation into hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump’s lawyers confirmed to The Associated Press Thursday that the indictment had been handed down, but they insisted the 45th president did nothing wrong.

“He did not commit any crime. We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court,” attorneys Susan Necheles and Joseph Tacopina said in a statement to the AP.

Trump released his own statement a short time later, saying he is the victim of a politically motivated probe led by Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“This is a Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” he said. “From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats — the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country — have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement. You remember it just like I do: Russia, Russia, Russia; the Mueller Hoax; Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine; Impeachment Hoax 1; Impeachment Hoax 2; the illegal and unconstitutional Mar-a-Lago raid; and now this.”

The former president went on to say he is “completely innocent.”

“The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable — indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference,” added Trump, who hopes to win back the White House in 2024.

The investigation centered on a $130,000 payment Trump’s then-attorney Michael Cohen made to Stormy Daniels right before the 2016 election — to keep quiet about an alleged affair, which would have likely tarnished Trump’s presidential campaign.

The grand jury decision makes Trump the first former president in U.S. history to be charged with a crime.

As of Thursday evening, the D.A.’s office had not released details on the specific charges.

Trump is expected to surrender to authorities next week, the AP reported.
