Tory Lanez, who is serving ten years for shooting fellow hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion, released a new album from prison on March 7.

Lanez, or someone with his login credentials, announced details about the album on the rapper’s X (formerly Twitter) feed.

“This comeback is personal,” read the March 4 post, which included a shirtless picture of the rapper along with news the  album title is Peterson — after Lanez’s birth name of Daystar Peterson.

The post garnered nearly 1,000 comments by Thursday, March 6, and most were positive.

“Incredible music on the way!” one person replied.

“My GOAT is back, good music at last,” another person wrote.

Although someone else wrote, “We don’t care.”

A video uploaded to the rapper’s X account on March 6, described the release as “the first-ever professionally recorded in real time prison album.”

Lanez was convicted by a Los Angeles jury on Dec. 23, 2022. He was remanded into custody at the Los Angeles County jail immediately after jurors handed down the verdict.

The Canadian rapper insisted that he was not guilty of the July 2020 shooting in the Hollywood Hills.

The charges against him included assault with a semiautomatic firearm; discharging a firearm with gross negligence; and carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle; along with the special allegation of using a firearm to inflict great bodily injury.

In August 2023, a Los Angeles judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison, and he was transferred to North Kern State Prison in Delano, California.

Lanez announced on social media in July 2024 that he was recording new music. “Not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music,” he posted at the time.

The rapper said it took 20 to 30 tries to make a decent-sounding recording via a phone call. “Me and my engineer have finally figured out how to record music over the jail phone,” he shared.

Weeks later, a new post on social media said prison guards had seized his audio recording equipment.

He is currently housed at the state prison in Tehachapi, California, about three hours northwest of downtown L.A., according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) website.

On March 7, the CDCR told Urban Hollywood 411 no rules were violated when Lanez recorded his album.

“Incarcerated persons have access to state-issued tablets, in which they can communicate via video calls. If the incarcerated person calls an outside party, with the incarcerated person’s permission, the other party can record the conversation,” corrections officials said in a statement.
