‘The Little Mermaid’ Gets Release Date on Disney Plus

The Little Mermaid will be available on Disney+ this fall.

The live-action remake of the beloved 1989 animated classic arrives on the platform Wednesday, Sept. 6, the streaming service said in a press release Monday.

The digital release will feature special bonus content, including Oscar winner Javier Bardem as King Triton performing the song “Impossible Child.”

The film tells the story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea.

Singer and actress Halle Bailey leads the cast as Ariel. While visiting the surface, she falls for dashing Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. The main cast also includes Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina.

Rob Marshall directed the movie musical adventure from a screenplay by David Magee.

The film arrived in theaters on May 26.

It went on to gross $564.3 million at the global box office, making the movie a financial disappointment. The film had a reported production budget of $250 million and cost millions more to market.

Critics gave the film mostly positive reviews and a 67 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many praised the performances and described the remake as a “wonderful addition to the story,” “dependable,” and “dazzling.” But other critics said the movie was “dramatically vacant,” with “flat and washed out” visuals.

The Little Mermaid was produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John DeLuca, and Rob Marshall. Jeffrey Silver served as executive producer.
