The Family Business is based on creator/showrunner/executive producer Carl Weber’s New York Times bestselling crime book series.
Urban Hollywood 411 hopped on a video call with Weber and executive producer/director Trey Haley for details on the season 5 storyline, the upcoming New Orleans-based spinoff, and a crossover with Weber’s hit series, The Black Hamptons.
Urban Hollywood 411:
Tell fans what they can expect?
Carl Weber: This season is probably our hottest, most dramatic season. We call it the “Duncan Civil War.” It’s father against son, and there’s a lot of infighting amongst the family. It’s a little messy.
How long did it take you to write this season?
Carl Weber: We do have a writers room. But you know, I’m the person that pens most of the stuff. So, it’s 10 episodes, and it probably took me about three and a half months to get the whole season done.
You have some really amazing guest stars this season. Talk to me about the process of getting some of these folks and who they are.
Trey Haley: We’ve got a special guest from the TV show Dallas. How fitting is this?
Carl Weber: My family members were huge Dallas fans. This season, we were lucky enough to bring in Patrick Duffy, Bobby from Dallas, onto the show. He plays a crooked sheriff. And I remember him as a young man, and he was always such a goody and [now] he plays a real, real good, bad guy.
Who else is coming to the show?
Trey Haley: We also have RonReaco Lee, who is a favorite to a lot of people. RonReaco, he’s obviously from the Black Hamptons. And as you know, in this Carl Weber universe, everything is kind of crossing. So. he comes in and brings a really important element to this. I will say those are our two and then we do have some surprise guests. Well, I really can’t say, because it’s a part of the story. But I would just say this — there’s some fan favorites involved from the past that are coming back.
Is there anyone else you’d like to work with?
Trey Haley: Obviously, we have our spinoff with The Family business: New Orleans coming. You’re going see a lot of new characters within that show, that’s coming out in the fall… we have a lot of people we definitely want to work with.
Season 5 of The Family Business premieres with three episodes July 4 on BET+, followed by a new episode, every Thursday, with the finale debuting on Aug. 22.
