Friends and fans have been sending prayers to Stevie Wonder, after reports surfaced that the legendary singer is battling health problems.

While the exact nature of Wonder’s medical issues is not known, one of the singer’s friends — who asked to remain anonymous — told the Detroit Free Press the Motown icon is “doing better now than he was a couple of months ago.”

In a story published on July 3, the paper said it spoke to multiple people with ties to Wonder about his condition, which it described as “serious.”

“He’s got some health challenges, but he doesn’t want a big PR thing out of this,” said musician Joan Belgrave, a longtime friend of the singer.

“He knows what he has to do to get himself together, and he’s doing it,” Belgrave added. “He’s got a team around him — that’s what he needs. He’s got people around him who love him.”

Wonder is currently preparing for performances in Europe, and has been promoting the concerts on social media. Because of his health issues, the singer is traveling with a medical team, according to the Free Press.

Rumors about the “Isn’t She Lovely” singer’s health began to spread several days ago, when WDAS Philadelphia radio host Patty Jackson told listeners Wonder is suffering from kidney failure and had started dialysis. She did not identify her source.

“Prayers going out to singer Stevie Wonder… He’s currently on dialysis, hoping that one of his children will give him a kidney,” Jackson said in a video posted to YouTube on June 25. “He’s been having health problems most of the year.”

Najee Ali, a Los Angeles activist and friend of the singer, took to Twitter on July 3 to say he’s “praying for Stevie Wonder.”

Fans have also been offering prayers and well wishes across social media.

A rep for Wonder did not respond to Urban Hollywood 411‘s request for comment.

On July 6, Wonder confirmed he needs a kidney transplant.
