Perez Hilton faces a “long” recovery after suffering serious injuries during a livestreamed mental health crisis, his family said in a new update.
“Perez’s condition remains serious but stable. He experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries that will require surgery in the coming days,” the family shared in a statement posted Saturday, Aug. 8, on PerezHilton.com. “His treatment and recovery will be a long process.”
The family added that Hilton’s mother and sister were able to spend time with him on Friday.
TikTok Admits ‘Moderator Error’
The celebrity gossip blogger streamed his medical emergency on TikTok the night of Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Hilton could be seen holding a knife and bleeding while appearing to harm himself. Other social media users on the livestream expressed alarm and pleaded with him to stop. “Perez, no!” one person yelled.
The livestream continued for at least 15 minutes, prompting criticism of TikTok for failing to shut it down sooner. The video was later removed, and Hilton’s account was suspended.
TikTok said its moderation system flagged the stream minutes after it began, but a “moderator error” delayed its removal.
Baker Acted
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to Hilton’s Miami-area home after receiving “multiple calls regarding an individual who was livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media.”
Hilton was hospitalized under Florida’s Baker Act, as previously reported. Per state law, the Baker Act allows a person experiencing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily taken to a medical facility for an emergency psychiatric evaluation and held for up to 72 hours.
In Saturday’s statement, Hilton’s family confirmed that he “remains hospitalized under Florida’s Baker Act.”
Family Pleads for Privacy
The family also urged members of the media and the public to stay away from their home and stop photographing Hilton’s children.
“There is absolutely no reason for members of the media or the public to remain outside the family’s home,” the statement read.
“We again respectfully ask members of the media to leave the home and surrounding area, stop following family members, and cease photographing Perez’s children,” the family added.
In a previous update, the family revealed Hilton’s three children were at home when the crisis began.
“Just minutes before the public livestream incident, Perez’s children, niece, and sister were inside the home,” the family said on Aug. 6. “When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma.”
Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., is a single father of three children born via surrogacy.
