Sherri Shepherd Blames ‘The View’ for Failed Marriage

Sherri Shepherd is opening up about how her time as a co-host on The View influenced her decision to marry now ex-husband, Lamar Sally.

Shepherd shared her thoughts during a Monday appearance on The DL Hughley Show, noting that she was “lonely” during her first years on the daytime talk show.

“I was in New York doing The View and I was lonely. That’s what it was,” she explained. “You can’t do stuff out of fear and being lonely. All of the women of ‘The View’ were amazing, but they had lives. Whoopi would go home and eat her brownies, she was gone for the night.”

She continued: “Elisabeth Hasselbeck had her family and Joy [Behar] had hers, so I was out there by myself. I didn’t have custody of Jeffrey, I’m fighting for custody of Jeffrey, and Niecy Nash introduced me to this person.”

Hughley then chimed in with some advice, stating: “They say never shop when you’re hungry, and you should never look for a relationship when you’re [lonely].”

“And I have to take responsibility for that,” Shepherd replied. “At the time, I was in my 40s and I was scared. I was like, ‘I’m getting older, who’s going to want to be in a relationship?’ It was a lot of stuff done out of fear.”

Hughley also revealed his first impression of Sally, calling him a “sorry a– dude”.

“Everybody said that,” Shepherd quipped. “Steve Harvey said it, Barbara Walters said it, Whoopi [Goldberg] wouldn’t come to my wedding. Everybody tried to tell me. The only person who showed up was Kym Whitley, because she got a free iPad and she was my bridesmaid. We gave away free iPads.”

Sally and Shepherd were married from 2011 to 2014. Their split was acrimonious due to Sally and Shepherd’s custody battle over their son, who was born in August 2014, after the breakup.

The baby boy was delivered by a surrogate the couple hired when they were together, using Sally’s sperm and donor egg. Shepherd tried to have the contract voided and her name removed from the child’s birth certificate, however, a judge ruled that her name would remain on the boy’s birth certificate.

Shepherd has had to pay her ex child support, but a judge denied Sally’s 2017 request to increase the payments.

“Shepherd now hopes that her ex will stop his frivolous attempts to get more money out of her and will seek gainful employment to take care of his child like any other capable parent,” her legal rep said at the time.
