Fans will soon see never-before-released footage of late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in a new documentary.
Netflix said via a press release on Tuesday, May 13, that Selena y Los Dinos celebrates the “Queen of Tejano” music like never before, through her family’s personal archive.
The documentary, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, took home the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling.
According to the streamer, the film tells the story of Selena and her family band, which went from performing at quinceañeras to selling out stadiums.

Directed by Isabel Castro (Mija, Darlin), the film is executive produced by Michele Anthony and Selena’s siblings, Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III, who also performed in the band.
“We are so excited to finally share that our documentary Selena y Los Dinos is coming to Netflix,” Suzette Quintanilla said in a statement. “Grateful to have a platform that helps bring Selena’s story to fans around the world.”
“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” Castro added. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before.”
The documentary comes 30 years after Selena’s death in March 1995. The 23-year-old was fatally shot in a Corpus Christi, Texas, motel room by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, who had been accused of embezzling over $60,000.
Saldívar was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
In December 2024, she filed for parole citing safety concerns. But, as previously reported in March 2025, her request was denied. She will be eligible again in 2030.
The documentary was produced by Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, J. Daniel Torres, David Blackman, and Simran Singh.
According to Deadline, the streaming deal with Netflix is estimated to be worth $6 million to $7 million.
Selena’s legacy has remained strong, especially in the Latino community. In 2017, her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony drew an estimated 4,500 fans, breaking the attendance record previously held by Vicente Fernández’s 1998 event.
Since her death, Selena’s story has been retold in various projects, including the 1997 film Selena starring Jennifer Lopez and the 2020 Netflix series Selena: The Series, which was also a collaboration with the Quintanilla family.
Selena y Los Dinos is expected to stream this winter on Netflix. More details on the movie can be found on Netflix’s Tudum blog.
