Ron Cephas Jones and his daughter Jasmine Cephas Jones have made television history after becoming the first father-daughter duo to win Emmys in the same year.
Ron, 63, picked up his award on Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. His win came in the Guest Actor in a Drama Series category for playing William Hill on NBC’s This Is Us. It was his second Emmy for the role, after previously winning in 2018.
Broadway veteran Jasmine, 31, won her first Emmy on Sept. 17 for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for her work on Quibi’s #FreeRayshawn.

After winning his award, Ron shared his excitement about his daughter’s victory while speaking in the virtual backstage press room.
“As a parent, that’s the most fulfilling [thing] I could ever feel,” Ron said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I mean, winning another Emmy is icing on the cake, but to see my daughter progress and move into this place where she’s earned an Emmy, it’s beyond words.”
Despite Ron’s excitement, it initially appeared he would end the night without an Emmy when the show mistakenly announced the wrong winner.
The mix-up happened when an on-screen graphic named Ron the winner, but the announcer incorrectly read the name of his competitor, Jason Bateman, for The Outsider. After a commercial break, a title card showed there had been a mistake and the This Is Us actor was the actual winner.
Saturday marked the final installment of the virtual five-night Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor outstanding artistic and technical achievement in television. The awards began Monday with a ceremony honoring reality and nonfiction programming. Tuesday’s ceremony honored variety programming. Scripted programming was recognized on Wednesday and Thursday. More Emmys will be handed out this evening, when the top 23 categories are presented during the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards at 8 p.m. ET/5p.m. PT on ABC.
