Ricky Gervais Jokes About ‘Racist’ Golden Globes on Night No Black People Won

Ricky Gervais unleashed a barrage of insults on Hollywood Sunday night in Beverly Hills, during his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

The British comedian urged the A-list audience to skip their usual political speeches. He compared The Irishman actor Joe Pesci to Star Wars: The Mandalorian character Baby Yoda; and attacked the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., the Globes voting body, for the lack of representation among this year’s nominees.

“Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that. Hollywood foreign press are all very racist,” the five-time Globes host quipped. “We were going to do an In-Memoriam this year, but when I saw the list of people who died, it wasn’t diverse enough. No, it was mostly white people and I thought, nah, not on my watch. Maybe next year. Let’s see what happens.”

To be fair, Cynthia Erivo, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Lopez were all nominated in the acting categories. While Beyoncé received a Best Original Song – Motion Picture nod for co-writing “Spirit” from The Lion King. Unfortunately, none of them won.
