Quincy Jones Remembered as Friend and Mentor by Will Smith, Lionel Richie, Whoopi Goldberg

Tributes are pouring in for music legend Quincy Jones following his death on Sunday at age 91.

Jones was known not only for his talent, but also as a mentor and advocate for artists, helping shape the careers of Will Smith, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey, among many others.

Will Smith, who starred in the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air after being cast by Jones, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram.

“Quincy Jones is the true definition of a Mentor, a Father, and a Friend. He pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself,” Smith wrote. “He defended me. He nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He checked me when he needed to. He let me use his wings until mine were strong enough to fly.”

Jones also had an impact on Goldberg, whom he introduced in the 1985 film The Color Purple, which he co-produced.

Sharing her grief on her Instagram Stories, Goldberg posted: “Quincy Jones was my friend and was one of a kind. I was lucky enough to have him in my life all these years. My heart is breaking for his family & his extended family who loved and adored him…my condolences.”

Music icon Lionel Richie posted a photo of himself with Jones, captioning it, “Wow, Q – what a great ride!! With love always.”

LL Cool J also honored Jones with a tribute on Instagram, describing him as a “father and example at a time when I truly needed a father and example. Mentor. Role model. King. You gave me opportunities and shared wisdom. Music would not be music without you. My condolences to the entire family. I love you. Rest in the sweetest music eternally. #ripquincyjones one of one.”

Other celebrities, including Colman Domingo, Victoria Monét, and Gloria Estefan, shared tributes on social media as well, recognizing Jones’ lasting legacy and his influence on music and culture.

With a career spanning over seven decades, Jones wore many hats as a composer, arranger, conductor, trumpeter, and producer — lending his talents to music, film, and television projects throughout the years.
