SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details on the April 7, season 5 premiere of Queen of the South on USA Network.

Season 5 of Queen of the South opens with skepticism about James, a desperate search for money, and everyone vowing vengeance.

Teresa (Alice Braga) is seen running after a woman (who looks a lot like herself) with a gun. The impeccably dressed cartel boss says she’s no longer the scared girl from Mexico. Now she’s “the one who does the hunting.”

Moments later, James (Peter Gadiot) is shown recuperating after his shocking return at the end of season 4. King George (Ryan O’Nan) is skeptical about James. As he searches for answers, he finds a phone tracker and a jammer inside James’ bag.

“What is James doing with all this stuff?” Kelly Anne (Molly Burnett) asks. King George vows to find out.

“I can explain,” James says before admitting he’s been working with the notorious Devon Finch (Jamie Hector). But James tells Teresa he’s not the one she should be worried about. He says he came back to warn her she’s “been targeted.”

Just in case James is really there to set a trap, Teresa tells King George, “You know what to do.”

Everyone Wants Revenge
Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) is grieving the death of his son Davis (Derek Evans), who committed suicide last season. Instead of sitting at home shedding tears, the judge gets an equally shady police captain to falsify the investigation report to make it look like Davis was murdered. Lafayette lies by telling police he saw the killer and implicates Marcel Dumas (Alimi Ballard).

A news report is shown on screen saying police are searching for Dumas who’s suspected of murder. Teresa can’t believe what she’s seeing and calls Dumas to warn him, but there’s no answer.

“This doesn’t make any sense. Why would the judge want to frame Dumas?” Kelly Anne asks. “Because Dumas chose me over him,” Teresa tells her.

Speaking of revenge, Boaz (Joseph T. Campos) returns to New Orleans and says he wants to kill the judge for killing Javier (Alfonso Herrera). Boaz brings along a cousin named Angel, who says “we came for vengeance.”

Teresa tells Boaz they have to wait until the time is right. Boaz agrees, but follows the judge to a local bar.

Russian Problem
King George and his crew take James to the distillery where he told them he was shot by the team sent to kill Teresa. There’s no blood on the ground and King George is skeptical.

“I don’t see any blood. Let me guess, it was the cleaning lady’s day off,” King George says sarcastically.

Suddenly the kill team returns and there’s a wild shootout. James grabs a gun and proves his loyalty to Teresa by helping to bring down the kill team.

“You won’t find any ID on him,” James says as King George rummages through one of the dead guy’s pockets. There’s no identification on the body, but King George notices a series of tattoos on the man’s chest.

“I’ve seen these tats before,” he says.

The cameras then cuts to Teresa in New York making a deal with a Dominican drug kingpin (Elvis Nolasco). She’s hoping to raise quick cash to start a legitimate business. The meeting is problematic since the Dominican is a sworn enemy of the Russians, who Teresa just went into business with.

Oksana (Vera Cherny) learns about Teresa’s deal with the Dominican and tells her she’s playing a dangerous game. Teresa brushes the warning off and asks Oksana to set up a face-to-face meeting with her cousin, the ruthless Russian drug boss.

Oksana says it’s not a good idea but agrees to do it. She later calls Teresa and says her cousin will take the meeting, “but it must be now.”

Just as Teresa, Kelly Anne and Pote (Hemky Madera) drive up to the meeting, Teresa’s phone rings. It’s King George.

“James is good. We found the other guys, but we’ve got a serious problem,” King George tells her. “They’re Russians.”

Queen of the South airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA Network.
