“Your majesty,” she says to the king. “I’m George,” he replies as he grabs her hand.

Here’s the official description of the new series: “Centered on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.”

Shonda Rhimes is showrunner, executive producer and writer of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

“I want people to feel like this is what happens with real love. Love is hard. Love is difficult. Love has many layers,” Rhimes said in a statement about the series. “The idea that the happy ending that we always talk about for characters doesn’t have to be the obvious one.”

The show’s creative team also includes Betsy Beers, who co-executive produces, and Tom Verica is director and executive producer.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story begins streaming May 4 on Netflix.
