‘The Woman King,’ ‘Emancipation,’ ‘Till’ and Female Directors Shut Out of Oscar Nominations

Oscars-Snubs

The 2023 Oscar nominations are out and there are some surprising snubs, with The Woman King, Till and Emancipation all shut out of the competition.

Despite receiving nods from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Image Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and being named Best Actress by the African-American Film Critics Association, Till star Danielle Deadwyler was ignored by Oscar voters for her performance as Mamie Till-Mobley in the Civil Rights drama.

Viola Davis, who led the cast of historical action drama The Woman King, was also snubbed after picking up nominations from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Image Awards, and the BAFTA Awards.

Other notable snubs included Will Smith for his performance in the slavery drama Emancipation. Smith won the Best Actor prize last year for his role in King Richard. But after slapping Chris Rock at the ceremony, Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for ten years.

Tom Cruise was snubbed in the Best Actor category for his role in Top Gun: Maverick — the highest grossing domestic film of 2022. Adam Sandler was overlooked as well for his critically acclaimed performance in the Netflix basketball drama Hustle.

Jeremy Pope, who led the cast of The Inspection as a gay Black teenager trying to hide his sexuality after joining the Marines, was snubbed in the Best Actor category despite receiving Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Awards nominations.

Oscar voters are being called out on social media with the hashtag #OscarsSoMale, for not nominating a single female filmmaker in the Best Director category, when Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), Chinonye Chukwu (Till), and Sarah Polley (Women Talking) all helmed critically praised films.

The nominees in the category are Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, Todd Field for Tár, and Ruben Ostlund for Triangle of Sadness.

After earning $171 million worldwide at the box office, Jordan Peele’s Nope starring Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun was snubbed.

Some surprise nominations included Ana de Armas for Blonde and Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie in the Lead Actress category.

Other surprise nominations were Judd Hirsch for The Fabelmans and Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway in the Supporting Actor category.

The 95th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The awards will air live on ABC.
