The two held hands and Robbie helped Minaj straighten her wrap skirt for the cameras.

The rapper told Access Hollywood at the premiere, “It’s a dream come true, a full circle moment. I couldn’t really afford Barbies when I was little … so now, I get to be a part of a whole Barbie movement.”

Robbie leads the cast in the title role, while Minaj contributed the song “Barbie World” with Ice Spice and Aqua to the soundtrack.

The rest of the cast also hit the pink carpet, including Ryan Gosling who plays Ken; Issa Rae who co-stars as President Barbie; Alexandra Shipp who portrays Writer Barbie; Kate McKinnon who plays Weird Barbie; America Ferrera portrays a Mattel employee; and Dua Lipa who plays Mermaid Barbie and contributed the song “Dance the Night” to the soundtrack.

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird), directed the movie from a screenplay she co-wrote with her partner Noah Baumbach.

Gerwig spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday and said she wanted the script to be “outrageous.”

“We wrote it at such a specific time, in the midst of lockdown and everything else, and I was like, I don’t even know if there’s going to be movies again, but if there are, let’s write the most outrageous, anarchic, hilarious thing,” she said. “It was something where I decided I had to direct it once the script was written and it was really like I just wanted to make that one, that was the one. So I was like if we can’t do it, that’s fine, but I hope they let us.”

The movie was filmed at a Warner Bros. lot in England and Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles.

It opens in theaters nationwide on July 21, and internationally on July 19.
